Technologies Employed

At Holoflex you have access to several specialized technologies under one roof. This facilitates the ease of integration of multiple technologies in a single product, brand or company - ensuring greater control on product security and standardisation at all intermediate processes.

We also have security designing capabilities to produce documents of high value and further print them on a wide range of substrates with a wide array of security features. We ensure our security and authentication solutions are 100% secure during production and transit in an end-to-end solution.

Holoflex offers multiple hologram origination systems. Depending on the requirement of the project we will suggest the technology and the features that are ideal.

2D/3D Origination

A 2D/3D hologram has two or more levels with a good feel of depth. It is an entry level hologram with limited security features.

Dot Matrix Origination

Dot Matrix enables more vibrant holograms with kinetic effects that make it interesting to the viewer. It is therefore easier to register as an anticounterfeit device and considered good enough for most commercial security applications.

DOVID Origination

This origination allows a very high level of security. Features range from easy to identify to micro- and nano-features that cannot be matched by 2/3D and dot-matrix origination technologies.

Some security features that are possible using the above technologies are shown below. This is not an exhaustive list and we recommend that instead of having too many features in one hologram, it is more effective to have limited features with a distinctive design that is easy to identify and verify.

At Holoflex we use a cutting edge security design software that can generate truly secure features. The Holoflex design team is skilled to work on a range of speciality software to create unique designs and patterns consistent to the branding requirement. Selection of features depends on the problem statement and we usually engage with the brand team to suggest the optimum solution.

Our security designing skills include special effects and features, overt and covert, across our product range. Some unique features that discourage duplication attempts are:

  • Complex guilloche patterns – often seen on government issued secure documents and banknotes
  • Hidden messages visible only through special decoding films – with different message at changing viewing angles
  • Invisible patterns registered to visible patterns
  • Small text that is not visible to the naked eye but only through a magnifier
  • A message or area that will shift colour with a change in viewing angle
  • A message that will shift colour when heat is applied, or even if the area is rubbed briskly – this can be reversible or irreversible
  • A printed mark or message that smudges when it comes in contact with water – often used in warranty labels to know whether the product has come in contact with water;

Most commonly, variable data has to be printed on labels to keep track of stocks and consumption. More complex or random codes may also be required for track and trace solutions. Bar codes such as 1D, 2D, QR codes and Data Matrix codes are also examples of printed variable data.

Variable data significantly enhances ease of material tracking as every single label is unique. Holoflex is capable of printing variable data with the following technologies:

  • Laser Marking
  • Ink-Jet Marking
  • Ultra-Violet (UV) cured ink jet Marking
  • Thermal transfer

Holoflex also has speciality marking capabilities such as

  • Invisible variable data
  • Variable data in multi colour
  • Variable data in changing font sizes (exploding fonts). These can be seen in some banknotes nowadays

We not only supply labels with variable data, but our AIDC solutions team also provides turnkey solutions to set up variable data printing at the client site, such as for MRP labels. As a part of the solution we can supply the printing machine, software and the printing media e.g. labels and thermal transfer ribbon.

We even provide turnkey solutions for the third number plate (sticker) under the High Security Vehicle Registration Plates mandate.

Security substrates are required to ensure that a tamper evident label is not removed intact with intention of reuse on a fake product. We offer these substrates for all self adhesive holograms and labels in the brand’s colour of choice.

If removed or tampered with, such labels will always leave a tell tale sign on the original place of label. Some available options are:

  • Full transfer: When the self adhesive label is tampered, only the clear film comes out and the holographic information remains embedded. This makes it impossible to remove any part of the hologram for reuse.
  • Partial release - Checkerboard: When a self adhesive label is tampered, a checkerboard pattern can be seen on the label. Imagine the entire image is broken into two parts like the black and white squares of a chess board: the black squares come off the film, while the white boxes remain on the product. As the original image cannot be reconstructed, it is impossible to reuse the label after tampering.
  • Partial release - Honeycomb: When such self adhesive label is tampered, a honeycomb pattern can be seen on the label. The entire image is broken into two parts – one part of the image gets left behind on the product and the other part remains on the film. As the original image cannot be reconstructed, it is impossible to reuse the label after tampering.
  • Partial release - Void: When a self adhesive hologram or non holographic label is tampered, a VOID pattern can be seen on the label – the entire image is broken into two parts – part of the image gets left behind on the product and the remaining part is on the film. The term Void appears on the film in hand and the product. As the original image cannot be reconstructed, it is impossible to reuse the label after tampering.
  • Partial release - Custom pattern: When a self adhesive label is tampered, the label can be designed to demonstrate a customized pattern instead of Void, Checkerboard or Honeycomb, which are all standard patterns.

Promotional coupons and labels with a reward-winning message are a popular marketing tool for trade and consumer promotions. A silver scratch off coating covers the reward. However these are prone to duplication, leading to the rewards being usurped by unscrupulous people. While several security features can be introduced to protect against such duplication, Holoflex has pioneered the holographic scratch off to ensure that only by the intended audience collects the rewards. Both stock-image holographic scratch-offs or customised holographic scratch-offs are available.

A truly secure solution is multi layered. At Holoflex we have always focused on increasing the verification options among the covert and forensic features. Machine-based verification allows verification by scanning with a simple hand held reader.

The object scanned is a holographic element where a hidden image reflects when a laser pointer is flashed in a certain area. Such hidden images may be static or animated and can be one channel or two channels.

Another feature is that we apply a special optical or ink based element into the label and a reader is used to verify the same. Typically, after placing the reader in the desired area a button is pressed. In case of a positive verification the reader may respond by flashing a green light, sounding a beep or playing back a custom audio message.

Demetallization is a feature that is used to enhance the security and the aesthetics of a hologram or metallized label. Normal holographic labels are fully metallized. With our demet technology we can selectively remove the metal from metallized substrates and make them transparent. As a result, specific texts or patterns can appear as a transparent feature within an overall metallic label. We can create a simple window or even intricate fine line patterns and texts, making it easy for the consumer to identify.

This feature is also offered on hot stamping foils where fine text and patterns become an attractive and secure design element.
